MAGACIN KABARE (“The Warehouse Cabaret”) is a professional cabaret group founded in Sarajevo in the winter of 2010 by a group of young established and upcoming local artists. Born from the needs of young people in order for their own artistic empowerment and expression, MAGACIN KABARE represents a unique space in the artistic and social scene of Sarajevo. The group also puts a diversity of shows and performances, ranging from standup comedy, to political satire, to more musically infused theater.
Over two years of its existence, MAGACIN KABARE grew into social issues theater by setting standards for activism trough art performances, both by innovative approach to presentation of sensitive social issues and unique performance. Building off of the history of art in Sarajevo, where artistic expression was used as a means of empowerment and as a relief from conflict during the war, MAGACIN KABARE uses cabaret as a means of empowerment and artistic political and social commentary while offering relief from the present day ills that the Bosnian society faces.
Talking about establishing MAGACIN KABARE, Zana Marjanovic, founder of this art group, prominent BiH actress and the leading star in the Angelina Jolie’s movie “In the Land of Blood and Honey” said: “For a long time I was thinking about forming an art institution that can be able to react fast and respond adequately on current issues of our society. On the other hand, I didn’t want to form another group of artist “molesting” its audience with performances emphasizing the dark side of today’s World. My wish was to find amusing, witty and charming expression that will make people laugh, but in a same time provoke audience to react. That was the backbone idea for MAGACIN KABARE. In the period of two years of intense and hard work we have proved that joint efforts can make huge changes in the field of arts that affect our society.”
Presently, MAGACIN KABARE gathers over twenty artists and their performances can be seen every Thursday and Saturday in well known café Gogo in Sarajevo. Also, this company extended its activity to cooperation with national TV station BHT, so for the second season its commentary on current burning issues of BiH society can be seen on the TV every Friday.
