New Dacic-Thaci meeting in Brussels ends without deal

Thaci, Ashton and Dacic in Brussels

Serbian and Kosovo PMs Ivica Dačić and Hashim Thaci met today in Brussels to continue dialogue that is being held in Brussels under the sponsorship of the EU. European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton was also present at the meeting.

After the meeting Thaci said that meeting had ended without deal. He added that executive and judicial powers of the Association of Serb municipalities on Kosovo were completely unacceptable for Priština. Still, withdrawal of Serbian security structures from Northern Kosovo was agreed, according Thaci.

A new round of the Kosovo dialogue has been scheduled for March 20.

Earlier today Baroness Ashton had separated meetings with Dačić and Thaci.

Last night in Brussels Ivica Dačić met with the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State  Philip Ricker who said that U.S. government strongly supported the dialogue process between Serbia and Kosovo.

Yesterday Serbian top officials met today in Belgrade to discuss the position of Serbia in upcoming talks with Kosovo officials. They sent the message that Serbia expected the change of Priština`s attitude and to show much more willingness to make compromise.

Earlier Dačić said that Serbia had showed the will for a compromise in the talks with Priština authorities. “We don`t have anything else to propose except the Kosovo independence and we will never do it. Everyone must know one thing: we won`t give up on our legitimate interests just to get a date for the start of EU membership“, said Dačić couple of days ago.

It is clear that positions of Belgrade and Priština are rather distant of each other. The real question is: is this difference going to destroy everything that was built in the dialogue process during the last few months?
