The comings and goings

The Church and Mosque together

Church and mosque together in Urosevac/Ferizaj, Kosovo

The Balkans has always been a great training ground for the windward and all possible trials, tests, modifications… Empty top of the hill that winds whipping all around. Seemingly calm, peaceful and quiet, but always in fear of the worst storms. Place of warfare, conquest, liberation, victory, defeat… The place of constant movement. Permanent movement of goods, services, passenger, politics, ideologies, religions, customs, traditions, boundaries. At the intersection of all possible paths and routes between the east, west, north and south. Of Catholicism, Orthodox and Islam. Between communism and capitalism. Therefore, it has always been subject of different influences, cultures, philosophies, and social changes, but still same, in its minds, because it has never been stable enough to be nothing more but inconstancy, what eventually has become its permanent feature. Immersed in its unique mentality mixed with influences and rich of accumulated layers of their specific character of differences. Slave of its own customs, traditions and habits. Constantly in tense, uncertain, obscure, too passionate, good and terrible, repulsive and attractive at the same time. Without calmness and serenity. Like most of personal, difficult Balkan lives.

And just like the the whole area, the mentality and atmosphere, the people of the Balkans have never had peace as well. Except of permanent conquests, settlements, and displacements, migrations caused by war, exoduses, searches, persecutions, people have come to the Balkans from their own, personal, and many other reasons. And even more of the comings, people have benn going from the Balkans – permanently or temporarily. There are two types. Those who have come as punishment, official, diplomatic or military duty, and those who have come in search of adventure, intense experience of living and enjoying all its fullness. In all its passions, love, happiness, joy, and hateful, sufferings, and problems..

Much more numerous, the goings, that are a permanent feature in the Balkans area, have been mostly caused by large and frequent military conflicts, socio-political changes and politics. And they mainly have been some kind of escapes. From worse to better. For better education, jobs, quality of life, human rights and freedoms, personal and general safety. Regardless they have been often higher, randomly leaves, fortunately they have never been systematical organized and still not threaten the wealth of human resources as the most important for the Balkans. Unfortunately, the Balkan countries have never established a system to minimize goings from this area and provide the conditions for normal life and work with dignity, as one of the main causes of.

And what does it really mean to go? Part of one’s life, that completely defines it in some way. On one hand means escape, tear, new exile, separation and painful change. And in another means new life, beginning, habits, people, learning, discovery, new meaning, new culture, language, mentality, adapting, learning, opportunity and salvation. Finally, like the Balkans themself, there is no just one answer, although it is probably reasonable and possible, on this question of the comings or goings. With its fragmentation and duality, in a some way it defines an entirely new – different kind of life, which is here and there, somewhere on the border, somewhere in between. Neither here nor there. Somewhere in the meantime, in the mean- world, in the mean-life. In life in two, three or five lives and worlds that flowing and passing in parallel and independently, making this one life in one different way.

And maybe the only answer is to accept it. In mediation, in searching and finding of basic and real values of this life with a special mission and destiny, which is always on each side complete, as part of a single life that a man has and lives.
