There is an interesting article in the New York Times about young Americans from Montana who support bigger influence of central government. Young people from Montana (and let`s assume that it`s not too much different within the rest of USA) are leftist, they support Big Government which induces economy-and they call themselves `liberals`?!
Of course, we know today that term `liberalism` does not mean what it used to mean. Once `liberalism` meant that you do not support big government, that you do not support big taxes, that you do support and believe in individual initiative and ability of every man to create his own way of “pursuit of happines“. Actually, this was the essence of American Constitution and, even more important, fundamental American values. Individualism, personal and economic liberty, free market and (we should never forget it!) strong faith in God (“In God We Trust“) were foundation of United states of America.
Today everything is much more different. As we can see, young Americans (and the similar thing is with the most of Hispanic Americans, Afro-Americans and other communities which basic values are not compatible with free will, individualism, free market and importance of private property) share completely different values. They do want Big Government. They do not believe very much in free market. They do support same sex marriages, abortion and other things which were strictly condemned in the golden age of America`s progress. Christian ethics is not very popular thing in today`s America.
It is quite obvious that things have changed. People have changed. USA have changed. It`s not “In God We Trust” anymore, Obama formalized “Change We Believe In” as new American motto.
Let`s put aside all of it now. The real question is would these radical changes of values and perception bring prosperity to American people? Do the young people in USA live better today after several decades (with relative exception of Reagan`s presidency) of Big Government? Is the life of young Americans better today than it was before Obama?
What is the substance of this change? People enjoy less freedom than they used to. They pay bigger taxes to enable Big Government to controle their lives. They left initiative to government and government didn`t manage to make their lives better. And it won`t do it, it can`t be done that way.
Young Americans shouldn`t have any illusion: things won`t be better if they continue to transfer responsibility from themselves to government. They have quite enough historical precedents which prove that the process of the government growting always ends the same way: with totalitarianism and both material and ethic deprivation.
Capitalism is not bad thing. Crony capitalism is bad thing. Young Americans mustn`t forget that the best way for establishing the arrogant and ruthless rule of monopolist guys is-Big Government. When you transfer your natural rights to government you expect that government will fight against the cruel capitalists. But it never does. Government protects the biggest capitalists and make monopolists of them. In this game regular people have absolutely no chance to win.
The only way to fight against monopoly and crony capitalism is-free market. Free market enables equal chances and risks for every player. No one is protected, no one is stimulated. You can make great fortune but you can also go bankrupt. The whole idea is that you don`t need to pay the government to protect and stimulate my private property. That would be far from fair.
So, the young Americans should reassess the real meaning of equity. Nothing should be taken for granted. America is great nation but it is up to new generation of Americans to improve this position of nation. If they don`t do so everything is possible, including the terrible regress.
It wouldn`t be anything new in history of civilization.
